Our girls are preparing for the Women's Superleague final against Spartak from St. Petersburg. We mark important milestones on the way to the historical series.
Debut in the Women’s Superleague for our club took place less than two years ago. In the 22/23 season, Runa, with a very young squad, performed at the adult level for the first time. By the way, our team also ended that season with games against Spartak St. Petersburg. Then the Muscovites beat their opponent in the series for 5th place with a score of 2-1.
The first cup success for the women's Runa happened at the beginning of this season. Our club won the Berlin Cup, winning all six games in the tournament. This also allowed the girls to play in the 1/8 finals of the Winline Russian Cup, where they met a team from the Premier League – Samara. Runa achieved victory in the first game (75:71), but did not maintain the advantage in the second (58:68) and allowed the opponent to move on.
A series of eight wins in the first half of the regular season helped our team lead the Superleague table. True, immediately after this there was a decline and three defeats in a row. They returned brightly – beat Vologda-Chevakata (70:57) and took the biggest win of the season over Platov (115:38). Further, Runa’s position only became stronger.
The best in the regular season were our girls. In the decisive round with the participation of the three best teams, Runa beat UMMC-Junior twice and exchanged wins with Dynamo-Farm. This allowed our club to get ahead of its competitors in the fight for leadership in the standings. Yulia Savukova, as the main scorer of the best team, became MVP.
The road through the playoffs was not easy. In the quarter-finals, Runa defeated Spartak Noginsk in two games - 68:63 at home and 78:61 away. But in the semi-finals with Sparta & K-2 the fight turned out to be serious. 28 points by Eleonora Oleynikova helped our team defeat the opponent in the first game – 71:67. The second game was unsuccessful for Runa – we lost 58:65 on the road. Everything was decided only in the third game, where our girls were stronger - 76:62 and we are in the final!
The final of the Women's Superleague 23/24 starts tomorrow. The first game of the series for the championship will take place at the Dynamo Sports Palace (Lavochkina, 32) and will begin at 15:00.
Runa head coach Viktor Danilov told about the team’s readiness for the final:
«We had a good rest after the 1/2 finals and prepared for Spartak. We managed to analyze the opponent’s strengths and now we understand how to play against them. So we are calmly waiting for the final series, we are ready to go into the first game in full readiness».
One of our team leaders, Eleonora Oleynikova, also shared her expectations:
«The final series is what we have worked hard for all season. Of course, tomorrow will be an interesting game, we expect full dedication from both teams. Desire will be a very important factor. I hope we will show great basketball for our fans!»
